Making Music with Plants

  • Join us on the Trail of Plant Evolution in the Conservatory Entry Garden to get a hands-on interactive sound experience allowing participants to use plants as live musical instruments.

  • You will be invited to interact with the plants to explore how your physical touch changes the music soundscape and create your own “living” composition.

  • Our team will be on-hand to answer your questions about the Interactive Musical Plant Installation and the Biophony: SoundGarden experience.

How Does it Work?

  • Sensors attached to each plant will detect slight electrical variations as well as humidity levels in the plant’s soil.

  • These variations are translated into different pitches that can be played by several different musical instruments using a mobile app.

  • You can play multiple plants together by touching their leaves and branches to generate different patterns, textures, and melodies.
